Cable and Wireless
Cable and Wireless
Cable and Wireless delivers content, documents and applications to more than 5000 users in over 250 customer organisations, predominantly in the UK.
Each of these customer organisations using this system requires total assurance that their data and documents are not viewable by others - in many cases, customers are each other’s competitors. Also, since potentially thousands of customers could use the system, Cable and Wireless requires that the day to day management of a customer’s users be distributed away from the centre and be easy to do.
Aligning Technology with the Buisnesses needs
Cable and Wireless chose Ascendant Technology’s client portal to meet their business needs. It was deployed on IBM WebSphere Portal and the solution delivered the following:
- Robust security and confidentiality between customers
- Delegation of authority to and within customers
- Separate groups within customers for workflow, content and product access
- A simple, non-technical interface
- simple customer administration for Cable and Wireless
Ascendant Technology saves Cable and Wireless £1/4million
In November 2005, Cable & Wireless were due to renew their IBM Software under the IBM Passport Advantage scheme. Passport Advantage requires that customers pay an annual fee to qualify for IBM Service and Support. The renewal was set to cost Cable & Wireless over half a million pounds so they asked Atech to audit their software use to identify potential savings.
Ascendant began the process by getting a consolidated list of all Cable & Wireless renewals. This list was then reconciled against software actually being used in each department in the business. Through this process, Ascendant were able to identify savings on the renewal of £221K.
In August 2005, Cable & Wireless announced its acquisition of Energis, another IBM software user. Again, by getting all Energis renewals and reconciling against actual software used, Ascendant were able to achieve savings of £22K for Cable & Wireless. Passport Advantage offers customers a banding system which allows them to achieve discounts based on the amount of software purchased. As a large IBM software user, Cable & Wireless qualify for Band H. By moving the Energis software from their current band F to this higher discount band, Ascendant saved Cable & Wireless a further £16K. Using Ascendant’s licence management has therefore saved a total of £259K.
